Quick. Grab a bike!

This Saturday is Picó Picante’s second annual Traveling Tropical Dance Party!

Other than being voted by DigBoston as “Boston’s Best Dance Night” in the 2012 Dig This Awards, Picó Picante knows how to throw one mean traveling dance party!

The Nomadic Dance Party coincides with Boston’s annual Caribbean festival CARNIVAL that’s also happening this week and weekend.  #Purpose people, #Purpose

Last year’s party/event/bikeextravaganzafreeforall was such a blast I definitely had to write about it this year.  It was great to meet so many people out partying on bikes, just having an amazing time over sun and a thick dose of reggaeton.  This footage I just discovered from last year is pure madness.
(I’m not telling you when you can see me!)

Picó has procured a number of vibrant DJs for this year’s ride that will keep the party bumpin throughout the day~

DJ KID AFRIK

DJ KID AFRIK is sure to rinse the sounds of east Africa to the Boston streets this Saturday. Kid Afrik stands out for the diversity and pure positive vibes he brings to the tables. Undeniable. Party. Sound. The perfect blend of uplifting, sexual, and politically righteous vocoder-laced lyrics makes Afrik’s highly lyrical style digestible for all listeners. Thinking about the DJs I know in Boston, I can’t think of a much better fit for this weekend’s festivities!

By American/European DJ standards, Kid Afrik’s mixing style could be taken as choppy from the perspective of a music culture that (over?)values beatmatching and long, seamless transitions. Yet, I think it’s crucial to acknowledge that the highly lyrical and syncopated rhythms that Afrik dabbles in don’t allow as easily for the flawless transitions that a seasoned house or techno listener would be accustomed to. Instead, Afrik’s style is more an onslaught of diverse styles mixed with attention to accompanying key and lyrical competence. I found myself constantly surprised listening to Kid Afrik’s NAIJA VS AZONTO MIXTAPE. Throughout the mix I felt like anything could happen at any point in time.

There’s no real way of telling when Afrik’s going to pull the trigger or let the track ride and take you to that warm special place.

Afrik’s style isn’t the sort of thing you hear enough in Boston in my opinion – all the more reason to see you Saturday!

Here’s Nomadic Picó Picante’s tentative schedule.  Come join the ride at the beginning or at any of the planned stops~

2:30 PM – Gather at Stony Brook T station (Lamartine and Boylston Street, Jamaica Plain)
3:15 PM – Head to Egleston Square Youth Center (YMCA)
3:30 PM – First stop at Egleston YMCA (3134 Washington Street, Roxbury) with Riverport DJs
4:30 PM – Head to Villa Victoria Center for the Arts
5:00 PM – Second stop at Plaza Betances, Villa Victoria (100 W. Dedham Street, Boston) with El Canito Maravilloso
6:30 PM – Head to China Gate Plaza Park
7:00 PM – Third stop at China Gate Plaza Park (Beach Street and Hudson Street, Boston) with DJ Kid Afrik

SUMMER’S NOT OVER YET! And Nomadic Picó Picante is going to prove that Saturday. Trust on that one.

Get ready for the afterparty* too!

*Not actually sure about that one but just suggestively throwing it out there with a high degree of certainty ; )
