I leave for Southby Southwest today – for a guy like me, the ultimate Summer Camp for artists of all persuasions. I haven’t even gotten to Austin yet, but the delirium and sensory overload feels like it’s already setting in – I know the feeling all too well. Before I moved from Austin, Texas to Boston last August, SXSW was the event I (or any Austinite really) would look forward to all year. At this point, Austin is renowned as a musical oasis of some weird* sort (*”weird” being a term praise for Austin folks, hence the motto “Keep Austin Weird,” and they’re pretty damn successful). But the other big Austin festivals, especially Austin City Limits and Fun Fun Fun Fest, can’t even compare to the magnitude of SXSW.
For two weeks, Austin TX will be plunged into a cultural exchange with the world at large that will all but transform, and utterly gut the city.
Needless to say, I had to go back this year, and DigBoston has given me the opportunity to shed some light on the happenings at #SXSW2013 as well as the sunny-side culture of Austin, Texas that I’ve spent the past six years basking in! I couldn’t be more excited. I can ensure you that this will be the high point of my non-inebriated blogging, that’s for sure.
But who am I? Whoa, question. My name is Anthony Dean Norton and for the past six years I’ve DJed and partycipated in electronic music culture under the moniker djahSwelta ~ Swelta for my family. I started my voyage into the electronic music world in Austin six years ago – going to shows, playing parties, and meeting like-minded people obsessed with electronic music just like me.
After some years I started co-hosting a night called The Void ATX where we strove to push more and more diversity in the already vibrant Texas electronic scene (Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio included in that for sure). I’m working with a handful of shows of my own for SX this year including the RWD.FM 2 Year Birthday Showcase on Wednesday, March 13.
So what am I gonna do for you Dig peoples?!
Over the course of the next week I’ll be catching up with players in the Austin electronic scene, big names in EDM, attending some absolutely bonkers showcases, after-parties galore, and reporting on this Texas-sized cultural clusterfuck.
